SUMMARY:Stewardship Sunday: Invasive Species Removal & Native Planting
DESCRIPTION:Invasive plants threaten native species by outcompeting them for resources and disrupting the habitats and food sources that native animals depend on. That’s why we prioritize managing invasive species on-site—and we’d love for you to join us this Sunday! \n\n\n\nThis is a FREE volunteer opportunity open to everyone! While advance registration is encouraged\, walk-ins are welcome if supplies and space allow. \n\n\n\nBe ready for an active day outdoors! You’ll be walking on uneven terrain\, with a chance your feet may get wet. The sand can become quite hot\, so plan accordingly. Bring sun protection\, a reusable water bottle\, and bug spray if needed. Closed-toe shoes are required\, and we recommend wearing long sleeves and pants for added comfort and protection. \n\n\n\nAge recommendation: 8+ (Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) \n\n\n\nPhysical activity: Light to moderate

SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Removal
DESCRIPTION:Habitat Builders hosts several volunteer events throughout the winter months to remove invasive plants from common areas. It’s the first step to building habitat. When you join us for these events you will learn to recognize some of our common invasive species\, learn how to remove them from the landscape and why this work is so important. We will provide tools if they are needed\, but feel free to bring pruners\, shovels or a mattock. Be prepared for cool weather and mud\, you will get dirty. We will provide some gloves\, but it’s always better to bring your own gardening gloves or leather gloves (or both). Our events last 2 hours\, but feel free to drop in and out as needed. Every plant removed makes a difference.

SUMMARY:Invasive Color: Using Invasive Species as Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Many of the plants we now consider invasive species were brought to this country for a purpose. This workshop explores several invasive plants which can be used as natural dyes. There’s no guilt about peeling off the bark or pulling up the whole plant to make these dye baths! \n\n\n\nYou will learn plant identification\, a bit of natural history\, methods to prevent spread of invasive species\, and how to use these otherwise undesirable species to create beautiful colors.  Experimentation will include the use of modifiers and mordants and several different methods for obtaining colors. You will go home with a minimum of eight different dyed skeins\, approximately 25 yards each. The instructor will provide yarn and all dye materials. Students should bring a plastic bag for samples. \n\n\n\nRegistration Includes\n\n\n\nPrinted instructions and all required materials\, including yarn and mordant (value $20). By the end of class\, you will go home with eight 25-yard mini-skeins of wool\, and the knowledge of how to make more. \n\n\n\nWhat goes into our class pricing? As a local nonprofit\, Duluth Folk School is committed to supporting both our instructors and community. We want to compensate our instructors fairly\, keep class sizes small\, and keep our doors open—while also keeping prices as low as we can. \n\n\n\nThank you for participating in our local handcraft and education economy! Together\, we help keep Duluth a fun and vibrant place. \n\n\n\nStudent Requirements\n\n\n\nYou should bring: Bring a bag to bring home your wet samples. Some folks also like to bring paper/pencil to take notes. \n\n\n\nSkill Level/Prerequisite Skills: This class is for anyone. \n\n\n\nBest for Age: 13 and older
