Matt will discuss the impacts of invasive plant and insect species\, including the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). Participants will learn how to identify and document the HWA which threatens our hemlock trees—one of the most important tree species in our local forests.  We will enjoy beautiful trails\, learn about local ecology\, and contribute to vital conservation efforts. \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS\n\n\n\nFrom Ithaca follow Rt. 13 south to just past Buttermilk Falls State Park. DESCRIPTION:SLELO PRISM invites you to join us for a 3-part learning series to be held this spring and summer (May – June 2024). This training is perfect for\, waterfront property owners\, lake associations\, kayaking groups\, seasonal staff\, or anyone who wants to learn more about aquatic invasive species (AIS). Participants will be invited to ‘adopt-a-water’ to survey for priority AIS. Continuing Education Credits will be applied for. Fill out the form below to register to attend these sessions. DESCRIPTION:Join us to help remove invasive plant species from the Riverwalk\, making way for native plants that attract and feed birds\, butterflies\, and more! \n\n\n\nLearn with us! What is an invasive species? Why would we want to remove them? What are the specific plants we’re removing from the Riverwalk?  We’ll be focusing on invasive shrubs such as Multiflora Rose\, Barberry\, and Honeysuckle  along with some trail work and thinning plants. \n\n\n\nNo experience needed! We’ll teach you how to identify and correctly remove the target invasive plants. Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty and dress in layers. Bring water\, sunscreen and gloves if you’d like! Also bring digging tools and a bucket if you have them. \n\n\n\nMeet in the parking lot of Wilderness Road Garden Club Park which is approximately 131 Campbell Ave\, Marion\, VA. If you arrive later and need to find people\, start walking down the trail! See you there! \n\n\n\nThe Riverwalk is a project of both the Washington County Master Gardeners (WCMG) and the Holston Rivers Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists (HRVMN). SUMMARY:AIS Paddle & Pull Event - Michaels Landing to Hyak Park
DESCRIPTION:WHAT: Join Willamette Riverkeeper\, Benton Soil & Water Conservation District\, and Oregon Parks & Recreation Department to help hand pull aquatic invasive species\, Ludwigia (water-primrose)\, Myriophyllum aquaticum (parrotfeather) and more on the Willamette River along the Corvallis to Albany stretch. These aquatic weeds continue to degrade fish & wildlife habitat in our rivers and have negative impacts on our native vegetation\, water quality and the overall watershed health. This is an on-water event\, so experience on moving water is recommended. We have ten tandem canoes (20 seats) for volunteers if you’d like to borrow one for the day you MUST SELECT this option in the “Add On” section of registration. Reserve a seat\, and make a new friend! \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in learning identification tips\, safe removal methods\, how to report & dispose of invasive weeds\, and have some fun paddling on the river\, then this is the perfect event for you! \n\n\n\nWHEN: Friday\, July 19th from 9:00am – 3:30pm PDT \n\n\n\nWHERE: We will meet at Michaels Landing Boat Ramp in Corvallis\, drop off boats and gear (staff guarded) and drive vehicles to Hyak Park (take out) in Albany. From there we will shuttle folks back to the put in (Michaels Landing)\, and get on the water from there. The first part of this paddle is all about community building\, education and enjoying this beautiful stretch of the Willamette. Once we get to our weed pull site there will be more time for education and getting your hands dirty to save our aquatic habitat through this important work! \n\n\n\nSee map above or link below for location.   \n\n\n\n\nMichael’s Landing\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS: Dress for the weather and a day on the water\, where you might also get muddy. Waterproof shoes (that stay on your feet) preferable. Bring PFD\, Canoe or Kayak with paddles. Please bring plenty of water\, lunch (to enjoy at Tripp Island)\, and sunscreen. Willamette Riverkeeper will have 10 tandem canoes (so 20 single seats) to loan out for the day and each will include 2 PFD’s & 2 paddles. If you prefer to bring your own kayak or canoe that’s great too! The paddlers also had a chance to remove a small infestation of EWC out of the Welland river.   \n\n\n\nThe ISC would like to thank all the participants from the 2023 field season. With your help the team was able to remove the total annual growth of EWC in the Welland River.  \n\n\n\nThe program is offering two paddling tours this year. Both events will launch from EC Brown public boat launch (River Rd.\, Fenwick\, Pelham\, L0S 1C0; see map location here). SUMMARY:Invasive Color: Using Invasive Species as Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Many of the plants which we now consider invasive species were brought to this country for a purpose. This workshop explores several invasive plants which can be used as natural dyes. There’s no guilt about peeling off the bark or pulling up the whole plant to make these dye baths! Students will learn plant identification\, a bit of natural history\, and how to use these otherwise undesirable species to create beautiful colors. Experimentation will include the use of modifiers and mordants and several different methods for obtaining colors. Each student will go home with a minimum of 8 different dyed skeins\, approximately 25 yards each. The instructor will provide yarn and all dye materials\, mordants\, and modifiers.
