Some are beautiful. However\, as with many things\, looks can be deceiving. Invasive plants and animals threaten some of California’s most precious resources\, as well as our health. Often these impacts involve surprising interactions that may not be obvious. Webinars are free\, but registration is required for each day. \nMonday\, June 6 – Successful Biological Control of Asian Citrus Psyllid in California presented by Dr. Ivan Milosavljevic \nAsian citrus psyllid (ACP) poses a significant threat to the long-term viability of the California citrus industry because of its ability to vector a bacterium that causes a lethal citrus disease\, called huanglongbing. Since the inception of the biological control program targeting ACP in California\, pest densities have declined by approximately 70%.This successful biological control program substantially reduces ACP densities in urban areas\, which may significantly slow the spread of huanglongbing disease in Southern California into commercial citrus production areas and will be the focus of our discussion. \n  \nTuesday\, June 7 – Planting Right with PlantRight presented by Alex Stubblefield \nMany invasive plants are attractive\, which is not surprising given that many were originally brought to California as ornamentals. Hear about ways the horticultural trade is working to stop the spread of invasive plants now and in the future through the PlantRight partnership\, and learn what you can do to make sure your landscaping does not contribute to the problem. \n  \nWednesday\, June 8 – Biodiversity\, Conservation\, and Why We Need Killer Dragonflies to Keep People and Our Ecosystems Healthy presented by Dr. Gary Bucciarelli \nIn this talk\, Dr. Gary Bucciarelli will discuss how stream biodiversity in California is impacted by invasive crayfish\, how this ultimately affects human health\, and what we can do to preserve our incredible (and dwindling!) freshwater ecosystems. \n  \nThursday\, June 9 – Emerging Insights on Invasive Shothole Borers in California presented by Dr. Shannon Lynch \nInvasive shothole borers have become established in many parts of Southern California\, and emerging research suggests that other parts of the state are at risk including the Central Valley\, Sacramento\, the Bay Area and the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs). This presentation will include promising research on using endophytes (bacterial and fungal microbes that live in trees) to control the tree-killing Fusarium fungus that the beetles “farm” in their galleries to use as their primary food source. Additional research to be discussed includes the model used to predict future spread of the beetles and their potential economic impact. \n  \nFriday\, June 10 – Early Detection & Rapid Response in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta presented by Dr. Rachel Wigginton \nThe Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is a highly invaded system\, and long-term management of existing invasive species populations is challenging for regional natural resource managers. The Delta Interagency Invasive Species Coordination Team has been leading efforts to plan how to prevent\, detect\, and quickly respond to novel invasions in the Delta.

SUMMARY:Niehaus Park Weed Wrangle 2022
DESCRIPTION:Seeking volunteers for workday to remove invasive plants (Huntingburg\, IN).\n\nJoin the Invasive Species Awareness Coalition (ISAC) of Dubois County\, for an invasive plant Weed Wrangle\, Saturday June 18th from 9am to 11:30am at Charles Niehaus Memorial Park in Huntingburg. In case of rain the event will be moved to Saturday June 25th. Volunteers will work to remove invasive plants such as Honeysuckle\, Burning Bush\, Autumn Olive\, and Wintercreeper from the forested area of the park. ISAC members will provide invasive species identification and control training.\n\nRemoving these invasive plants will help to improve the forest habitat quality and encourage more native trees and understory plants to grow. Volunteers do not need any experience to participate\, but should come prepared with long pants\, sturdy shoes\, and work gloves. Bottled water and hand tools will be provided\, but volunteers may also bring their own loppers or hand saws. Park at the Charles Niehaus Park parking lot just off State Road 64 W/@ 6th Street (by the driving range) and meet by the maintenance shed at the start of the trail.\n\nPre-registration is encouraged\, but not required. Minors must be accompanied by an adult\, and have a waiver form signed by a parent/guardian. SUMMARY:NISAW Webinar: Opportunities and Challenges for Preventing the Next Plant Invasion
DESCRIPTION:In the past 50 years\, the number of non-native species introduced outside their native range has doubled\, leading to substantial negative ecological and socioeconomic impacts. This is a problem that will persist as species introductions continue to rise and impacts are intensified by climate change and other drivers of change. It is well-established that economic returns on investment in prevention and eradication far outweigh those for containment and maintenance control management strategies\, but investment in prevention is still much less than what is spent on management. Weed risk assessment is a method to preemptively screen species before they are introduced to a new area (or as early as possible). It is based on the idea that species traits can be used to predict the success (or failure) of a species at passing through the stages of invasion and spread. In this presentation\, we will discuss different approaches to risk assessment\, how results are applied\, some of the benefits and costs of this process\, and the future of risk assessment to prevent continued plant invasions. \n\n\n\nPresented by Deah Lieurance\, Assistant Professor of Invasive Species Biology and Management at Penn State University\, and Theresa Culley\, Professor of Plant Ecology and past Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati

DESCRIPTION:SGPA’s Environmental Stewardship Committee helps to steward the park by removing invasive\, non-native species (learn more\, HERE). You can lend a hand to this important effort by joining as a volunteer. Projects will vary by week\, but generally include pulling\, cutting\, and otherwise removing invasive plants from around the park. \n\n\n\nThose looking for lighter work can assist by tending to the pollinator garden. This important oasis for pollinators needs to be weeded and watered throughout the growing season. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to join\, please meet at the main entrance of the park near the Ranger Shed by 9:30am. From there\, we will move to specific work areas around the park\, and conclude work at approximately 11:30am. \n\n\n\nSGPA will supply any tools or equipment needed\, and will provide training and oversight.
